Summer Sports Programs Keep Youth Engaged During Off-Season

GERMANTOWN— During the high school basketball season, Germantown’s Zak Showalter is one of the top players to watch in the area and it’s not really too different during the summer. Showalter and his Wisconsin Swing teammates play games all around the country, often in front of college coaches on the recruiting trail.

It’s a new era in high school and even youth sports. Football isn’t limited to the fall, basketball isn’t limited to the winter and that’s not only for boys. Many girls are playing their chosen sport year-round. The trend is taking away the all-around three or four sport athlete in high school, but is boosting the skill level for an athlete in a specific sport.

When it comes to baseball, kids have been coming to Ken Bigler Jr. for instruction for several years. Their busiest time used to be late winter and early spring in preparation for the summer season. However, their company is now getting ready for its second Fall Ball league for interested players. When it comes to sports these days, ’tis always the season.
